The amount of metred electricity used by data centres has increased by 10 per cent in one year.
CSO figures for 2025 show the total metered electricity consumption used by data centres rose to 23 per cent in 2025 from 5 per cent in 2015.
Consumption by all other users, including residential and business customers, went up by just 2 per cent in the same period.
Data centre consumption more than doubled between 2015 and 2019, and then tripled between 2019 and 2025.
In the ten years from the first quarter of 2015 to the last quarter in 2025, it grew 584 per cent.
The CSO noted that while households drive massive seasonal spikes in the winter months due to heating and lighting, the data centres consumption tends to increase with every quarter, with a slowdown in the first quarter of the year which was observed in 2024 and 2025.
