Irish Rail admits it has been "frustrating" this has been limited to the Dublin to Cork or Belfast routes
Irish Rail is temporarily re-introducing the tea trolley to some services between Dublin and Galway.
Catering will be provided by sambos.ie as part of a pilot project.
It will begin in the coming days on certain trips, for staff training purposes.
The pilot itself will continue for six months without public service funding, to assess the viability of the service.
Iarnród Éireann says it understands how much commuters value on-board catering services, and admits it has been "frustrating" this has been limited to the Dublin to Cork or Belfast routes.
