The new Criminal Legal Aid scheme was introduced on July 1st, and affects cases where criminal defendants require free legal aid.
Jim O' Callaghan has said that the new scheme will ensure fairness and efficiency with these cases, as well as highlighting a recent report of criminal legal aid expenditure rising from €19m in 2015 to €37m in 2024.
A spokesperson from the Department of Justice has confirmed talks have ended between Jim O'Callaghan and officials from the Law Society after an hour and a half.
The Law Society has yet to announce if tomorrow’s withdrawal of services will go ahead, or be stood down.
