This pilot scheme applies to first-time offending adults found with controlled drugs for personal use, who meet a certain criteria.
It's being introduced as part of a wider Government commitment to reduce drug-related harm and to make sure enforcement remains focused on those involved in the sale, supply and exploitation linked to drugs.
The Department of Health says the approach is intended to encourage early engagement with services, provide practical advice and reduce the potential long-term impact of a first personal possession offence.
If a person accepts this referral, they will then contact the HSE and engage in a rehabilitation and treatment programme, but if they don't accept it they'll be prosecuted under the relevant drugs legislation.
