More than 2,300 assaults on healthcare workers have been recorded so far this year.

According to HSE figures, there was 2,373 incidents in total.

Nearly three-quarters of these incidents were physical assaults, with 1,765 recorded.

There were also 585 cases of verbal abuse and 23 sexual assaults.

HSE CEO Anne O’Connor has said that many of the incidents happen in emergency departments.

The Irish Examiner reports while none of these events have been branded as "major", there have been over one hundred "moderate" incidents.

Some classifications of a moderate incident include significant injury that needs medical treatment, is reportable to the HSA, or requires a hospital stay of between three to eight days.
