Eight people have died following a number of road traffic incidents over the Bank Holiday weekend, bringing the total for the year to 78.
The latest fatality is a 21 year old pedestrian who was hit by a truck overnight.
It happened on the N1 at Carrickarnan, Drumad, Dundalk, Co. Louth at half twelve.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the lorry did not require medical treatment.
